Gunmen have kidnapped four Catholic Nuns in Imo, a State in South East Nigeria. The abduction took place on Sunday, August, 21.
The secretary-general of Sisters of Jesus, the Savior Generalate, Zita Ihedoro, a local convent made the news of the Nuns abduction available to the public on Monday.
According to her, the nuns were kidnapped on their way from Rivers State to Imo State for a thanksgiving service mass. "we implore for intense prayer for their quick 5and safe release", she added.
Knowledge Trend learned that the abduction took place around Okigwe City - Enugu road. No group has claimed responsibility for the abduction. However, the story of unknown gunmen, designated as UGM is not new in Nigeria. It is a repeated story that is yet to come to an end in the country.
There is a high rise in insecurity in several parts of Nigeria. Although the issue of abduction and insecurity have increased in almost every part of the country, gunmen have targeted mostly Christian churches and priests in the North and Central parts of the country. This has led to rising tension in the country and claims of Christian persecution in a country equally divided between Christians and Muslims.
While terrorism increases in the Northern and some other parts of Nigeria, kidnappings for ransom are rampant in Imo state and other parts of the Southeast. Many have accused Fulani herdsmen of taking part in the several kidnappings and killings in the region, while others blame IPOB and other groups agitating for the freedom of Biafra.
The fact that IPOB has denied such allegations on several occasions and the herdsmen are yet to claim involvement poses a serious challenge for identifying the perpetrators of these acts in the Southeast region.
