Reports have it that the lawmaker was only able to escape the attack because of his bulletproof car. The car, however, was riddled with bullets. An eyewitness says that the senator has sustained some injuries as well as other members of the convoy.

"I was driving up to that spot from the link road to the express when some people in a shop shouted at me and asked me to turn back and take another road, which I did”, the eyewitness added.

Many believe this was an assassination attempt against the senator. The reason for such an attack against the lawmaker remains unclear.

There has been a high level of insecurity in Nigeria for decades. Although it all began in Northeast Nigeria with terrorist groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP, Southeastern Nigeria has recently faced several levels of insecurity as well. Several people have been kidnapped and killed.

Senator Ifeanyi Uba is a prominent politician, lawmaker, and member of the Young People's Party (YPP). He is not the first politician in the region to face an attack by unknown gunmen. On May 2022, unknown gunmen kidnapped and beheaded Okechukwu Okoye, the lawmaker representing Aguata 2 constituency in the same Anambra State House of Assembly.

For years, insecurity in Nigeria only affected ordinary citizens. The fact that the elite class is becoming victims of the system themselves have raised a question about who is now safe in the country. Meanwhile, Nigeria was recently ranked as the second most terrorized nation in the world after Iraq.
