Highlights
  • Twitter is planning to charge users about $20 monthly to indicate a "blue tick" on their verified accounts.
  • Users who authenticate their account may lose the esteemed profile mark if they fail to renew their monthly "Twitter Blue" subscription.
  • More expected as Elon Musk continues to make changes on Twitter less than a week after taking over the social media company.

T(caps)he world's richest man and CEO, Elon Musk, who is the new Twitter owner, tweeted earlier about the company's plan to revise the "blue tick". In his Twitter post on Sunday, Musk said, "The whole verification process is being revamped right now".

"Blue Tick" is a blue sign that looks like a checkmark at the top of a social media user's profile after their name to show a verified account.

The blue tick is currently offered to users across different social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram for free. The blue is mostly given to social media users with large numbers of followers and as a means of verification to prove the account is authentic.

Twitter has a package known as Twitter Blue which charges verified users a $4.99 monthly subscription to unlock additional features. However, this package is optional and does not affect the blue tick and Twitter user's verification process.

Although Musk did not clearly state what the verification revision means in his post, there had been reports about Musk's plans to charge Twitter users as much as $19.99 monthly to authenticate their accounts.

A report published earlier today by The Verge, show that Twitter is set to impose monthly subscription on verified account owners.

"Twitter is planning to start charging $20 per month for verification. And if the employees building it doesn't meet their deadline, they'll be fired by Elon Musk," The Verge reported.

In the report, The Verge added that information from its internal correspondence and those working within Twitter shows that the social media giant is planning to change Twitter Blue, the company's $4.99 a month subscription into a more expensive subscription.

"Twitter is planning to charge $19.99 for the new Twitter Blue subscription. Under the current plan, verified users would have 90 days to subscribe or lose their blue checkmark," The Verge reported.

The report said that the new Twitter feature is scheduled to be launched on November 7th. This report follows Musk's continuous tweets about "revamping" the verification process.

Elon Musk had earlier stated his plans to implement several changes on Twitter. Some of the changes had already taken effect. Upon taking over the platform, Musk immediately changed Twitter's homepage appearance. He also fired ex-CEO, Parag Agrawal and other top Twitter executives.

It is less than a week since Musk took over the social media company. The speedy implementation of changes on platform, its management, and policies show how prepared Musk is to transform Twitter as we know it.
