The video was shared by a Twitter user @ashoswai with the caption:

The tweet by Professor Ashok Swain who is a professor of peace and conflict, caused social media outrage and got retweeted by thousands of Twitter users.

Although the Twitter user did not tell the exact university where the attack took place, Knowledge Trend Media learned that it was at the Delhi Campus of GD Goenka University of Gurugam.

A report by the Times of India detailed that about 60 Nigerian students of GD Goenka University had to run away from the campus after being abused at the football field and their hostels.

The clash is said to have started after a football competition between Indian students and African students. It was after the match that the Indian Students began to threaten Africans on the Campus.

In her tweet, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the head of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) shared the details of the attack.

“This happened Sat, as a result of a fracas, during a football match between African and Indian Students. The Nigerian mission immediately took custody of 86 Nigerian students, invited the representative of the Indian government, and got their commitment to ensuring the safety of the students,” she said.

Abike added that the students had returned to the campus and that some of the students sustained injuries, that investigations were ongoing.

“Calm has returned to the campus. A few injuries were recorded and further investigations are ongoing. The Nigerians mission had made it clear that the Indian authorities would be held responsible if anything happens to any of the students”.

BBC pidgin reports that it has tried to speak with the management of GD Goenka University through email and phone without any response as of the time of the report.

There had been several mob attacks against Nigerian students. Meanwhile, Abike assured Nigerians that there is already a written commitment by the Indian authorities to protect Nigerian students. She also directed every student who feel threatened to render immediate reports to the Nigerian mission in Delhi.
