Highlights
- Donald Trump officially announces plan to contest for the United States presidential election in 2024.
- Trump made this declaration on Tuesday, a short period after winning the Republican nominating poll.
- His declaration comes amidst several lawsuits by his opponents who accused him over several charges including the January 6, US Capitol riot.
- Trump remains very popular among Americans and his bid is going to be a tough challenge for Biden who has been underscored for poor performance.
This makes him the second president of the United States to contest for the position of Commander-in-Chief for two nonconsecutive times. He is to face President Joe Biden again in another presidential race in 2024.
Declaring his presidential ambition on Tuesday night, the ex-US president said his ultimate ambition is to make "declining" America "great again".
"To make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States. We are a nation in decline. We are a failing nation for millions of Americans," Trump said in a statement which was followed by a prolonged ovation from the audience.
"This campaign will be about issues, vision, and success, and we will not stop, we will not quit, until we've achieved the highest goals and made our country greater than it has ever been before," he added.
The former president also said that he would ensure that the current US president, Joe Biden, does not rule the country any longer in what he considers a failed government that mismanages the US economy. "I will ensure Joe Biden does not receive four more years," he boasted.
Trump Republican Party Level Win
Donald Trump who is now 76 years old, became the front-runner of the Republican Party's nominating contest against his opponent, Ron DeSantis, the Governor of Florida, who only won 20% votes.Trump remains the leader of the Republican Party and boasts of a huge sum of money in cash under his leadership of the party which will go a long way for his campaigns.
It is not yet clear whether his party level opponent will protest the poll, even so, being the top voice of the party makes it hard for him to lose the contest at the party level.
Trump's Popularity and Controversial Declaration Amidst Multiple Lawsuits
Donald Trump began his last tenure as the 45th president of the United States with his inauguration on January 20, 2017. He lost the 2020 United States 59th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, to Joe Biden after ruling for 4 years.
He and his supporters considered the last US election against Biden as leaked; a claim that led to his supporters invading the United States Capitol building on January 6, 2021. He was accused of being responsible for the chaos.
Tuesday's declaration of his presidential bid comes amidst mass criticisms by his rivals in the Democratic Party who accused him of leaking his way (with the aid of Russian hackers) into the US presidential sit during his first tenure.
Trump is also facing multiple lawsuits including the one relating to January 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol, and the FBI investigation into whether he has any top federal secrets in his possession.
Despite criticism and propaganda by his opponents (the Democrats), polls show that Trump remains very popular among Americans, especially members of the Republic Party.
Many Americans believe he would have performed better on the situation in Afghanistan and the current Ukraine war, among other issues. This makes his plan to contest again a nightmare for his opponents, and a tough challenge for President Biden.
