Ronaldo Says His World Cup Dream Has Ended After 0-1 Loss to Morocco in Qatar 2022 World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo says his dream of a World Cup victory for Portugal has come to an end. The Portugal captain made the statement in an emotional message to fans on Sunday. This followed Ronaldo's team's historic 0-1 loss to Morocco on Saturday, which eliminated Portugal from the quarter-finals at the ongoing FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The loss was the first of the tournament for Portugal, which had opened with a 3-2 win against Ghana. Portugal then recorded a 2-0 win over Uruguay and a 2-1 win over South Korea. The team in round 16 also recorded a 6-1 win over Switzerland but lost 0-1 to Morocco in the quarterfinals.

Ronaldo, who had scored four goals in the tournament, was unable to make a difference in the game with Morocco due to the coach's decision to bench him, and the team was eliminated. The defeat was especially disappointing for Ronaldo, who had been hoping to lead his country to a first-ever World Cup title before his retirement. Before his exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the football icon made history in Qatar as the only men's player to score goals at five separate World Cups after he scored Portugal's first goal against the Black Stars of Ghana in their opening match which gave the team a 3-2 win.

In a heartbreaking message to fans as shared on his official Instagram page, the super striker while expressing a sense of accomplishment for his past years in football said that a World Cup win for his country was the greatest dream in his football career but that the dream has come to an unfortunate end.

"Winning a World Cup for Portugal was the biggest and most ambitious dream of my career. Fortunately, I won many titles of international dimension, including for Portugal, but putting the name of our country on the highest level in the world was my biggest dream.

I fought for it. I fought hard for this dream. In the 5 presences that I scored in the world Cups over 16 years, always alongside great players and supported by millions of Portuguese people, I gave my all. I left everything on the field. I never turned my face to the fight and I never gave up on that dream.

Unfortunately, yesterday the dream ended." Ronaldo said.

Ronaldo added that despite his failure to accomplish his greatest dream in his football career in what he described as the end of that dream, he remains patriotic to his country and millions of his fellow Portuguese.

"It is not worth reacting hot. I just want everyone to know that much has been said, much has been written, and much has been speculated, but my dedication to Portugal has not changed for an instant. I was always one more person fighting for everyone's goal and I would never turn my back on my teammates and my country.

In his final statement, Ronaldo thanked his country, Portugal, and the 2022 World Cup host country, Qatar.

"For now, there's not much to say. Thank you, Portugal. Thank you, Qatar. The dream was beautiful while it lasted. Now it is time to be a good advisor and allow each one to draw their conclusions," he added.

Cristiano Ronaldo's Career in Football in Brief

C. Ronaldo began his professional career with Sporting CP, before signing with Manchester United in 2003. He quickly became one of the most successful and influential players in the Premier League and won three league titles and the UEFA Champions League with the club. He then signed with Real Madrid in 2009 and won two La Liga titles and four Champions League titles with the club.

In 2018, he moved to Juventus, where he has won two Serie A titles and two Coppa Italia titles. Throughout his career, C. Ronaldo has won multiple individual awards, including five Ballons d'Or and four European Golden Shoes. His accomplishments and influence on the game have earned him the nickname "CR7". Unfortunately, despite featuring in 5 consecutive world cup matches, he had not been able to secure a world cup for his national team, Portugal, as the captain.

CR7 is often ranked as the best footballer in the world, a position always debated for Lionel Messi. Ronaldo's career has seen a drift in recent times even as he plans to retire from football.
Meanwhile, Manchester United recently reached an agreement with him to mutually terminate his contract with the club which left the football star 'clubless' in the past weeks.

The loss to Morocco and Portugal's exit from the FIFA 2022 World Cup are a few of the saddest moments for Ronaldo since he began the noble journey in the world of football. Even so, football fans around the world consider him one of the best and most loved footballers in the history of football.
