Twitter Files Exposes How Former Twitter Owners Suppressed Freedom of Speech
Elon Musk has approved the publication of the TWITTER FILES, a series of tweets exposing secret documents inside the social media company that were hidden from the public by the former Twitter owners.
The first installment in the publication series exposes information from thousands of internal documents from the company giving details about how governments and individuals used Twitter to silent others and suppress freedom of speech without Twitter policy violation.
THE TWITTER FILES was published on Saturday by Matt Taibbi, the author of Griftopia, the Divide, the Secret of Drug Dealing and Hate INC.
In his tweets, Taibbi said that the original idea of starting the social media platform was to enable instant mass communication, and a true real-time global conversation. However, Twitter deviated from its role of giving people “the power to create and share ideas and information instantly, without barriers”, to impeding the freedom of speech it was meant to support.
He explained how Twitter staff began to use the platform to oppress their opponents, and how outsiders who had connections with Twitter insiders began to petition the company to hegemonize the society.
The tweet reads, “Some of the first tools for controlling speech were designed to combat the likes of spam and financial fraudsters.”
“By 2020, requests from connected actors to delete tweets were routine. One executive would write to another: ‘More to review from the Biden team.’ The reply would come back: ‘Handled’," Matt Tweeted.
The documents also show how politicians and celebrities were secretly using their Twitter insiders to block individual accounts and delete posts that tried to share the truth with the public, or posts that went against their ideologies.
It disclosed that in the US, for instance, both the Democrats and Republicans were indirectly silencing people through Twitter, but the Democrats had the upper hand. This, according to the publication, was because Twitter had more Democrats as its workers.
“Both parties had access to these tools. For instance, in 2020, requests from both the Trump White House and the Biden campaign were received and honored. However, this system wasn’t balanced. It was based on contacts.
Because Twitter was and is overwhelmingly staffed by people of one political orientation, there were more channels, more ways to complain, open to left (Well, Democrats) than the right,’ Matt added.

Part 1 of the Twitter Files: How and Why Twitter Blocked the Hunter Biden Laptop Story
Part one of the Twitter Files is on “How and Why Twitter Blocked the Hunter Biden Laptop Story”, a New York Post’s Biden Secret Emails, an expose’ based on the contents of Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop.Hunter Biden's story was a publication which exposed secret files including emails and videos obtained from Hunter Biden, Joe Biden son's laptop that he forgot somewhere. It gives details about how Hunter Biden influenced his father to have a meeting with a Ukrainian oil firm. It also showed other files and videos about how the now president's son was struggling with drug addiction and perversion.
After the New York Post published the Hunter Biden's laptop leak, the post was taken down from Twitter even when analysts say it did not violate Twitter's policies.
The Twitter Files detail how the Democrats used their influence to remove the Hunter Biden's Laptop Story from Twitter and other platforms as well as similar documents. In the publication, Matt states,
"Twitter took extraordinary steps to suppress the story, removing links and posting warnings that it may be “unsafe.” They even blocked its transmission via direct message, a tool hitherto reserved for extreme cases, e.g. child pornography."
White House spokeswoman Kaleigh McEnany was locked out of her account for tweeting about the story, prompting a furious letter from Trump campaign staffer Mike Hahn, who seethed: “At least pretend to care for the next 20 days.
The Twitter File revealed that the above decision was made at the highest levels of the company, but without the knowledge of the former CEO Jack Dorsey, with the former head of legal, policy, and trust Vijaya Gadde playing a key role," the document reveals.
