WhatsApp launched its first desktop client service known as WhatsApp web in 2015. WhatsApp web offered individuals access to their mobile WhatsApp accounts by scanning a QR code on the connected desktop screen with a mobile device.
The WhatsApp web had several limitations at the time of its launch. For instance, the app did not support iOS and other devices. Although several improvements were made on the WhatsApp web app over time, one still needed a mobile WhatsApp app account support to access it.
This new WhatsApp app for windows is designed to be native to desktop devices which means that users will be able to use their windows WhatsApp versions even without need for mobile account. Moreover, the new WhatsApp is expected to function even when the Mobile device is offline.
Earlier this month, WhatsApp said it was looking forward to improving its services for windows and Mac users.
"WhatsApp Desktop users have been using our web-based desktop app (WhatsApp Desktop) or our browser-based app (WhatsApp Web). As we're always trying to improve the WhatsApp experience for our users, we're developing apps native to Windows and Mac operating systems."
The new app according to the organization is expected to increase user reliability and be well-optimized for desktop Operating Systems (OS).
Zuckerberg's announcement is the beginning of a new WhatsApp experience for desktop users. However, he did not clarify if the new app is also available for MAC users.
